Methods

In order to answer research questions, an explorative survey with both qualitative (interview) and quantitative (questionnaire) methods was conducted in the Royal Dutch army (Van den Berg, 2008). On questions concerning organisational characteristics, 16 interviews with policy and executive employees within the army and an analysis of army policy documents were conducted. On questions about interests, the (multicultural) image of the Dutch army, socio-cultural, demographic and religious characteristics of ECM and non-ECM, knowledge of the Dutch armed forces organisation and job characteristics, a survey was conducted among 431 young people of both ECM and non-ECM within the four great cities of the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht). The survey was conducted in classrooms at different high schools during normal school hours, producing a 100 per cent response. The survey topics were measured by using scales and questions already used and validated in preliminary research concerning the same topics. The interviews and the survey were conducted from February 2007 until May 2007. The characteristics of the survey were these:
